CLINTON – In November, sitting down to a meal of turkey, potatoes, gravy, and warm apple pie is an American tradition. But, a Thanksgiving meal is not the reality for more than 750,000 Massachusetts residents who live paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford the high cost of an additional luxury meal that many take for granted.
That’s why volunteers, donors, and staff at the United Way of Tri-County’s WHEAT Community Connection are gearing up for their fifth annual “Feed a Family for Fifty” program. A $50 donation will provide a turkey and all the trimmings for a family of four in need this holiday season.
“Poverty outside of major cities is often overlooked, but we see every day that it is growing here in the suburbs,” said Paul Mina, United Way of Tri-County’s president and CEO. “The number of families accessing our food pantry in the Greater Clinton area is not decreasing, so we are once again asking individuals and businesses in the community to adopt a family for the holidays by making a gift of $50.
“Food is one of the largest expenditures in the family budget and can add an undue level of stress, particularly at the holidays,” Mina added. “By supporting families, we are doing more than providing a Thanksgiving meal. We are giving families the ability to come together with dignity, create memories and build traditions for years to come.”
With a $50 donation, the United Way of Tri-County can provide up to seven bags of groceries filled with a turkey, fresh vegetables, stuffing and dessert for a family in need this year. The United Way of Tri-County has a goal to feed 2,000 families across its three owned and operated food pantry locations this holiday season: WHEAT Community Connections, 272 High St., Clinton; Marlboro Community Cupboard, 255 Main St.; and the Pearl Street Cupboard and Café, 10 Pearl St., in Framingham.
Donations to the “Feed a Family for Fifty” program can be made through the United Way’s website at www.uwotc.org/feedafamily, by mailing a check to the WHEAT Community Connections (memo: Feed a Family), P.O. Box 847, 272 High St., Clinton, MA 01510, or by texting the word FEED to 91999 and following the text link to complete the donation.
