Mass211: The Unsung Hero of Social Services

If you fell and broke your leg, you’d know to call 9-1-1. But if you needed to find local human service programs, would you know where to turn? There’s a three digit number you can call for that, too. It’s 2-1-1!

Mass211 is a free statewide information and referral program started by United Ways 20 years ago that serves residents in every city and town across the Commonwealth. Our goal is to provide the most accurate information available the first time – and every time – someone reaches out.

Mass211 provides a centralized database containing comprehensive information about the range of human services available in Massachusetts that address social determinants of health. This includes resources for child care, family support, mental, physical, and behavioral health, housing and shelter, utility assistance, food pantries and meal programs, support groups, government benefits and services, nonprofit organizations, emergency preparedness and response, and other local resources.

Mass211 operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is confidential and translation is available in over 140 languages. When you call, an Information & Referral Specialist might even help you find resources you didn’t even know to ask for! You can also search Mass211’s database online or through a mobile app available for Android and iPhone.

Beyond this, Mass211 integrated the Call2Talk program as part of our platform in 2018. Call2Talk is a free and confidential mental health, emotional support, and suicide prevention program. Call2Talk provides non-judgmental support 24/7 to people in emotional distress or crisis through our telephone and text lines. Highly-trained volunteers respond to calls and texts to provide validating support and help the caller transition to a calmer emotional state.

If you’re a provider or non-profit in Massachusetts, make sure you’re in our database! Send an email to info@mass211.org.
